Kristina McBride, author of The Tension of Opposites, Destination: The Three Sisters

Today I’m celebrating the launch of my debut novel The Tension of Opposites. (Can I just take a moment to swim in a little YAY?) It’s a very exciting moment in my life, as I’ve dreamed of becoming published since I was a young child. In my novel, 16-year-old Tessa McMullen has spent the last two years shying away from a life she’s felt too guilty to live since the abduction of her best friend, Noelle. The novel starts when Tessa learns that her friend has been found alive, and is coming home.

Photography is one of the escapes Tessa uses to avoid her guilty feelings about simple things like living and laughing while she believed that her friend could never do those things again. One of her favorite destinations while on a photography shoot is the Three Sisters, located in Sugarcreek Nature Reserve. The fun thing for me, as an author, was to write about this beautiful location, as it actually exists near my home, and is one of my favorite hiding spots.

While shooting the trailer for The Tension of Opposites, we actually hiked all of our equipment deep into the woods of Sugarcreek to film the scene when Tessa first meets Max, the boy who tries to help her learn to live her life again. You might be asking yourself, as you look at these pictures, "Where is the third sister?"

Sadly, the middle sister, who had been weakened due to an earlier fire, fell to the ground during the summer of 2008. I learned about her fall just as I began lengthy revisions on the manuscript, and was so upset that I would never see her standing again. But I was proud that I had memorialized one of my favorite spots in my debut novel.
