‘Tis the Season

Everywhere I look I see holiday decorations. Some are garish and bold, others understated and plain. As a person, I, by nature, fall into the second category, so it’s very fitting that our holiday decorations are minimal. A wreath with a red velvet bow and white lights hangs on the front wall of our house, and the two trees bordering our garage door are strung with the same white lights. They don’t even twinkle. But for me, this is perfect. In my opinion, simple is best.

Since we decorated, I have become obsessed with checking out other people’s displays. My two young children are fans of the blow up figures (Santa, reindeer, polar bears, penguins, and of course, the gigantic snow globes). My husband and I tend to “ooh” and “aah” over the simple scenes that are similar to our own.

At least until the other night.

As we drove through a neighborhood a few blocks from our home, we saw a house that had taken their holiday decorations to a whole new level. My kids squealed with delight as my husband slowly stopped the car. We looked at the house, and then at each other.

“Crazy,” he said.

“Yeah,” I agreed. “But I think I love it.”

Since that night, I have fallen in love with that house. I think it’s the tree, dripping with all that sparkle. It made me feel like I’d entered some kind of wonderland. For a minute or two, it made me feel like a kid again.

Maybe one of these days I’ll be bold enough to do something so grand. If, of course, I can talk my husband into stringing miles of twinkling electrical cord. But for now, I’ll keep driving around town, obsessing over all the different ways my neighbors are celebrating the season.

I hope you, like me, have had some carefree things to obsess about this season. I wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday!
